What is the degree program about?
This short study program engages subject-specific and interdisciplinary theories and applications of gender studies. It employs an intersectional approach that includes the interplay of gender with other categories of social differentiation, such as racialization, class, sexual orientation, and age. The qualification provides access to gender-oriented research questions and develops the ability to engage in interdisciplinary reflection. The program aims to raise awareness of the significance of gender and its intersectional entanglements in society, culture, and academia.
The certificate consists of three modules which focus on these aspects:
- a collectively taught overview over various theories of Gender (Module 1, fall term),
- an in-depth exploration of the interdisciplinary field of Science and Technology Studies (Module 2, spring term, taught in English) and
- an exemplary Humanities focus in one of the participating disciplines (Module 3, freely selectable of a range of courses in different disciplines).
The certificate provides barrier-free access to gender studies theories and applications from an interdisciplinary perspective. Gender theories and applications are relevant to many research and professional fields and particularly enrich teacher training. A distinctive feature of the program is its strong interdisciplinary focus, which includes Science and Technology Studies. Students can use this additional competence to specialize within their own discipline or to develop their expertise in interdisciplinary research approaches.
