What is the degree program about?
In the master’s degree program in history, you will be taught in-depth scientific knowledge about the history of various epochs and regions on the basis of discussion of the latest research findings and extensive source work, and you will be guided to conduct independent research. In doing so, you will have the opportunity to develop an individual study and research profile, with epoch-specific emphases in the following areas:

With the offers of the chairs of Bavarian and Franconian Regional History as well as Eastern European History you can also specialize spatially. Further differentiation or thematic focus is also possible according to the research profiles at the department.

- A degree from a “two-subject BA program” with history as your first or second subject. You should have completed this with a grade of “good” (2.5 or better). If your degree is worse than 2.5, an admissions committee will decide whether you can be admitted to the program.
- A degree* in a related subject with at least a final grade of “good” (grade 2.5 or better), in which at least 40 ECTS credits were taken in the field of history. The admission decision here is made by the admission committee.(*Includes de facto all degrees that can be obtained at a Faculty of Humanities, as well as the fields of Church History, History of Law and History of Technology).

For all applicants, the proof of assured knowledge of Latin as well as the certification of knowledge of a modern foreign language, usually English, at least on the level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is a binding admission requirement.
Proof of foreign language skills is provided by the Abitur certificate or comparable evidence.
The “assured knowledge of Latin” can be submitted on one’s own responsibility as part of an “admission under conditions” within one year after starting the master’s program in history.
