What is the degree program about?
The master’s degree program “Learning Design – Digital Transformation in Education” focuses on the conception and design of digital teaching-learning offerings for adult learners. The course is based on media-didactic principles and interlinks these theoretically and practically with (media) technical aspects. Current trends in education are addressed. Students are enabled to design, implement and evaluate teaching and learning offers.

The degree program is interdisciplinary and focuses on a close interlocking of theory and practice, so that graduates are able to implement developed offers in practice. The study structure of the master’s program is modular and addresses different dimensions of learning design. In addition to compulsory modules that convey basic and advanced knowledge, the practical and project modules provide both application- and research-oriented insights into topics of learning design. The possibility of a stay abroad is considered and can be integrated into the course of study.

Students will benefit in particular from the courses offered in this program if they are interested in media didactics and enjoy bringing together different perspectives. Learning Design is aimed at students who would like to deepen their theoretical and practical knowledge at the interface of didactics, media and technology and who are curious about the design of learning processes for adult learners.

The program intends to educate students who will be employed in adult education/ lifelong learning/ higher education or comparable contexts in their professional careers. Thus, its focus differs significantly from that of other media didactics courses, which primarily address the school sector.
The program is interdisciplinary and focuses on a close integration of theory and practice, so that graduates are able to implement developed offers in practice. The program can rely on synergies in research and teaching with the larger field of media education at FAU, since two chairs and a professorship in this subject area are involved in the design of content and structures. Research topics can thus be brought in and made usable for the students, for example, through participation in them.
The Institute for Learning Innovation also offers direct opportunities for the implementation of practical projects, including innovative practical projects in the context of digital teaching, some of which have a European-international connection and promote this.

Graduates of the degree program can work in areas such as personnel development, university didactics, adult and continuing education. Depending on personal interest and thematic focus, this can be more of a conceptual consulting orientation, but also practical implementation. With the increasing digitization in the education sector, a dynamic and versatile field can be expected for professional activities as a learning designer.

The degree program is aimed at people with a bachelor’s degree in educational and social science courses (e.g. education, psychology, social sciences, communication and media sciences, didactics of computer science). Applicants with a final grade of 2.50 or better in a subject-specific or subject-related bachelor’s degree program are eligible for admission to the master’s program.
For students from subject-specific or subject-related courses of study whose final grade is between 2.51 and 3.50, a selection interview is held in which the following criteria are applied:
- Quality of subject-relevant theoretical knowledge (50%).
- Presence of relevant practical experience (25%)
- Reflective ability with regard to the linking of the practical experience with the course content of the Master’s program (25%)
Language skills
- German language skills for international applicants
- DSH 2 or equivalent
