Digital Teaching and Learning

Why online teaching?

As a highly-innovative university, digitalisation is a central component of teaching at FAU. Digitalisation provides a wide range of opportunities to improve quality in teaching and studying by

  • Supporting flexibility in terms of lecture times and rooms required
  • Facilitating innovative teaching concepts
  • Simplifying individual supervision
  • Offering opportunities for individualisation and interaction
  • Promoting self-guided learning
  • Simplifying how individuals can deal with varying needs and stages of life
  • Absorbing capacity bottlenecks
  • Strengthening national and international visibility
  • Promoting media skills.

Support for online teaching is available from the Innovation in Learning Institute (ILI), FAU’s centre of excellence for e-learning, which offers teaching staff media-based advice and training in online teaching, learning and examinations. Teaching staff can also take part in a certificate programme of training for university teaching offered by ProfiLehrePlus for online teaching.

The following services are available at FAU:

StudOn – FAU’s central learning platform

The StudOn learning platform offers all essential services for online teaching, learning and examinations. It is available to all students, teachers and administration staff as well as guest students, vhb students and cooperation partners.

The StudOn team, who are based at the Innovation in Learning Institute, also offers a hotline and advice on teaching concepts and training for teaching staff.

QuiS - Digitalisation

As part of the project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in the Quality Pact for Teaching programme ‘QuiS Digitalisation’, the Innovation in Learning Institute offers advice and funding for individual digital teaching concepts.

Electronic Examinations

FAU is one of Bavaria’s leading universities for electronic examinations. The StudOn learning platform offers a wide range of educational and technical examinations and exercises. The degree programme and examination regulations usually permit the use of electronic examinations. The Innovation in Learning Institute can offer advice and support with planning and conducting electronic examinations.

Multimedia centre at the RRZE

If you require support with producing various media, the multimedia centre (MMZ)at RRZE can help. It provides all University institutions with a wide range of media solutions and offers students an additional source of information for learning through the video portal and iTunes U. In addition, the MMZ operates over 20 video conferencing systems.

The Virtual University of Bavaria (vhb)

The Virtual University of Bavaria (vhb) is a network of universities in Bavaria. It provides online seminars for all students in Bavaria that are supported by online tutors. Students at Bavarian universities can use the courses provided at the Virtual University of Bavaria free of charge.

In the context of the vhb, teaching staff at Bavarian universities can apply for financial support for the development of online courses. Three support formats are available: vhb-Classic, vhb-Open and Smart-vhb.

Support with submitting an application is provided by the Innovation in Learning Institute. In addition to providing support with making applications, ILI also offers advice for media-based teaching concepts.
