More information

  • FAU Elections Office

Are you looking for the right contact person for a particular topic at a faculty or school? You can find the information you need on this page. You can contact the following people:

  • Mediators and the conflict management team at FAU can help you in conflict situations if you do not think the Graduate Centre team or the chairs of the bodies responsible for doctoral degrees are suitable for helping you with a particular difficulty you are experiencing while working on your doctoral degree.
  • The Doctoral Candidates’ Representatives Governing Body promotes the interests of doctoral candidates in all areas of the University. The latest information can be found here: doctoral candidates’ representatives’ blog.
  • The professors responsible for doctoral degrees play an important role throughout the process of working on your doctoral degree and the examination at the end. They make decisions on admitting candidates to the doctorate procedure together with the bodies responsible. The bodies responsible ensure that the doctorate procedure is conducted in an appropriate manner and not subject to delays. The chairs of the bodies responsible are entitled to take decisions that cannot be delayed on behalf of the bodies responsible.
  • Research representatives can provide advice on funding and applications.
  • Internationalisation representatives can provide assistance if you want to organise a research stay abroad or if you are from another country.

Mediators at the faculties and conflict management team

Working on your doctoral degree is a demanding task and involves collaborating closely with your supervisor. In rare cases, this relationship can become strained, particularly if some things do not go according to plan. Such issues are usually only temporary and can be solved by talking to your supervisor. However, if problems persist and a short discussion does not resolve the issues, conflict can occur which may damage motivation and affect work on the doctoral degree. If you experience such a situation you can contact the head of the Graduate Centre, Dr. Christian Schmitt-Engel, at any time. You can also seek advice from the chairs of the bodies responsible for doctoral degrees at the faculties. If for any reason you do not wish to contact the chairs of the bodies responsible, the following mediators are available to support you:

  • Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology (excluding School of Theology) (Dr. phil.): Prof. Mechthild Habermann
  • School of Theology (Dr. theol.): Prof. em. Hans Ulrich
  • School of Law (Dr. jur.): Prof. em. Franz Streng
  • School of Business and Economics (Dr. rer. pol.): Prof. Markus Beckmann, Prof. Oliver Schoeffski
  • Faculty of Medicine (Dr. med., Dr. med. dent., Dr. rer. biol. hum.): n.n.
  • Faculty of Sciences (Dr. rer. nat.): Prof. em. Klaus Rith
  • Faculty of Engineering (Dr.-Ing.): Prof. em. Heiner Ryssel

Regardless of your subject you can also contact Dr. Carmen Pospisil who represents research staff in the Graduate Centre’s Steering Committee and is also a member of the Council for Academic Staff.

In addition to the mediators, you can also approach the Conflict Management Team at FAU with your issue.

Conflict in the workplace

In addition to the mediators, you can also approach the Conflict Management Team at FAU with your issue or contact the Commission for Research Conflict Management. Members of the University who are affected by conflicts at the workplace are free to contact any of the conflict management officers in the Commission.

The new guidelines on preventing and dealing with cases of discrimination, harassment and sexual harassment at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and Universitätsklinikum Erlangen (UKER) came into effect on 1 June 2021. The guidelines are based on the General Equal Treatment Act (Allgemeine Gleichbehandlungsgesetz, AGG). However, as this only applies to members of staff at FAU and UKER, the guidelines specifically include all students and external parties (who are associated with either FAU or UKER). At the same time, these guidelines set out transparent rules governing employees’ rights to file a complaint at FAU pursuant to Section 13 AGG.

Doctoral Candidates' Representatives Governing Body

The Doctoral Candidates’ Representatives Governing Body represents the interests of all doctoral candidates at FAU. It consists of two representatives from each faculty who are elected for a term of one year. All doctoral candidates who are registered in the Graduate Centre’s database of doctoral candidates, docDaten, are eligible to vote for their representatives. The Governing Body represents doctoral candidates’ interests in a formal capacity within the University.
Members of the Governing Body are also part of the following committees:

  • representative in the Senate
  • two representatives in the Graduate Centre’s Steering Committee
  • advisory member in the Commission for Research and Young Researchers
  • advisory member in the Commission for Equal Opportunities
  • advisory member in the Library Commission

Elections are held once a year by postal vote. Further information is available on the Elections Office page.
