Offices of Doctoral Affairs

Offices of Doctoral Affairs, doctoral titles and doctoral degree regulations

The Offices of Doctoral Affairs at the faculties and schools have specific responsibilities including:

  • The application of the relevant doctoral degree regulations
  • The admission of doctoral candidates
  • The recognition of non-German degrees and degrees in non-subject-specific fields in connection with the admission of candidates (equivalence reviews)
  • The initiation and management of the doctorate procedure

As is the case at most German universities, FAU awards different doctoral degrees in different faculties and subjects. FAU’s general doctoral degree regulations and the faculties’ and schools’ doctoral degree regulations must be adhered to in order to obtain a doctoral degree.

You will find general FAQs on the Offices of Doctoral Affairs. Please also see the FAQs for the various faculties.

Office of Doctoral Affairs for the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology

Dr. phil. (Humanities and social sciences*); Dr. theol. (Theology)

*The type of doctoral degree awarded in the social sciences depends on the faculty, subject and supervisor.

Which changes have been introduced through the new doctoral degree regulations (dated 21 January 2013, as amended by the statutes dated 31 May 2016)?

  • * All candidates are required to register and be admitted before commencing their doctoral degrees.
  • * The doctorate procedure may only be initiated after admission and completing the doctoral thesis.
  • All candidates are required to submit their thesis in machine-readable form (CD/DVD).
  • Documents required for admission (Section 8 RPromO and Section 8 FPromOs) and for initiation of the doctorate procedure (Section 9 RPromO and Section 9 FPromOs) must be submitted as originals plus a copy.
  • Revised, personalised application forms (showing all declarations and documents required) will be made available for download from the doctoral candidate database docdata after registration.
  • The administrative status of the doctorate procedure can also be viewed under docdata following registration.

What do I need to take into account when applying to be admitted to a doctoral degree programme on the basis of a ‘cumulative dissertation’?

  • Section 10 FPromO Phil specifies that the cumulative dissertation (or ‘publication-based’) doctoral degree procedure is only possible in Psychology, Psychogerontology and Sports Science.
  • If you wish to apply for admission to a doctorate on the basis of the cumulative dissertation procedure, Section 10 (3) RPromO and Section 10 FPromO require that proof of publication and confirmation of authorship are included with your documentation. The confirmation of authorship must list all co-authors and their signed consent (see Section 10 (3) RPromO).
  • Section 10 FPromO Phil requires that a cumulative dissertation must include a minimum 30-page exposition which illustrates the contextual links between the various papers and shows that their contents are indicative of a broader knowledge of the subject.
  • If your supervisor is the co-author of one of your papers, a third supervisor must be appointed. As a doctoral candidate, you have the right to recommend such a person in consultation with your supervisor. The third supervisor will be appointed by the Doctoral Affairs Committee. There will usually be two supervisors from FAU and one external supervisor from another university. You will then have to submit four copies of your dissertation to the Office of Doctoral Affairs.

What requirements apply to theses for the oral examination?

According to Section 12 (4) FPromO, at least three theses for the oral examination must be submitted to the Office of Doctoral Affairs in printed form. It is generally advisable to discuss in advance with your supervisors which theses to submit. You will find more information in FPromO Section 12 (4).
