Modules Outreach

Modules Outreach

Outreach offers researchers at FAU a wide range of opportunities for making their research more relevant to science, business, society and politics.

Outreach at FAU can help you in each of the five central pathways of knowledge and technology transfer: from one mind to another, through training, via patents and licences, through cooperation and co-creation and via spin-offs.

Benefit from the comprehensive expertise of FAU Vice President for Outreach Prof. Dr. Kathrin Möslein in the area of transfer structures, formats and platforms within FAU and elsewhere, as well as from the wide-reaching expertise of coach Dr. Karl Rabes. In addition, you can benefit from the expertise of the Communications and Press team for professional science communication. You can collaboratively increase the effectiveness of your outreach activities by using the joint services, formats and platforms available across the University, while making an important contribution to the visibility and impact of FAU as a whole at the same time.

We can help you to seize the opportunities available to you by providing training in the outreach skills area. As part of FAUnext, we are currently offering two modules: O1 ‘Shape Your FAU Innovator Profile’ and O2 ‘Make Your Research Glow’.

Please register for the modules via StudOn.

Both outreach modules are held in English.

The coaches will get in touch with you directly before the module starts to pass on details about what will be covered in the modules and to let you know if there are any documents which you should submit beforehand.

During the module, you will explore how you can position and present yourself as a high-potential both within FAU and elsewhere. The module is centred on your FAU innovator profile, in other words a written résumé of your entire output which marks you as a high-potential. You will draft your profile in writing using a template before the workshop and submit it before the module starts. The profiles are subsequently forwarded to all participants so they can prepare for the workshop. The workshop itself involves an analysis, discussion and evaluation of how you are positioned with respect to your research and how you can focus, prioritise, and present yourself and your research within FAU and elsewhere. You will come to understand your own outreach potential and that of the other participants in terms of outreach and discover synergies with activities related to research, education and people at FAU.

The module is designed as a two-day workshop. Day 1 comprises four units of 90 minutes each. This is followed by an individually arranged personal meeting between you and the coach during which you can discuss the transfer of everything you have learned to your specific area of research and consider how best to shape day 2 to meet your needs. You will be guided to select the area of outreach that best suits your innovator profile and that will help you move forward in the areas of most relevance to you. Day 2 focuses on your specific needs and helps you gather relevant experience in an area at FAU derived from the analysis of your innovator profile that will help you on your path as an FAU innovator.

Please note that the workshop does not take place on two consecutive days. The second day is arranged with you individually. Our workshop coaches will contact you directly.

Schedule day 1:

  1. Present your own FAU innovator profileThe day starts with selected participants presenting their personal FAU innovator profiles. The profiles are discussed and participants receive feedback. Participants try to understand the potential of specific profiles in terms of outreach and to discover synergies with activities related to research, education and people.
  2. Analyse the profiles of other selected participantsYou will discuss the resulting strengths and specific opportunities and will also evaluate threats and potential weaknesses. As a result, you will be in a position to evaluate the synergy potential of various outreach areas.
  3. Understand the support structures available at FAUThere’s always plenty of support available at FAU. There are a wide range of structures that support FAU researchers with their outreach activities. Here, you will become familiar with the support structures at FAU and will be able to identify the most promising areas for you.
  4. Receive professional feedback on your FAU innovator profileBased on the day’s revelations and discussions, you will revise your FAU innovator profile and add synergies and offers of support. The individually arranged meeting with the coach will help you decide on and plan your activities for the second day.

Schedule day 2:

The second day revolves around your innovator profile revised on the basis of feedback received during the first day and in consultation with your coach to include the various offers of support from FAU. The second day takes a hands-on approach to explore in more depth the outreach activity you have identified as being most important for you.

The following lists some potential areas you may choose to focus on, but you are by no means limited to these FAU innovator activities, initiatives or platforms.

  • ZOLLHOF:Understand the lives and work of FAU entrepreneurs in ZOLLHOF.
  • Understand what’s behind citizen science and the activities at JOSEPHS – FAU’s open innovation lab in the heart of Nuremberg – and get involved in a co-creation project.
  • d.hip:Learn how to become a jury member at a start-up pitch event or how to get involved with organising a hackathon.
  • FAU Academy:Understand how innovative teaching and learning concepts are developed and launched on the market.
  • FAU Community:Find out how active community management works and how a platform is actively managed.
  • FAU Events:Assist with organising a conference or relevant workshop formats with FAU Events.
  • and much more!

Dates: 21 October 2021 (9 am to 5 pm); the subsequent appointments for your individual meeting with Dr. Rabes and your second day will be arranged individually with you.

Location: Online (we will inform you in good time if the event can be held face-to-face).

Unlike module O1, this module focuses entirely on the success of your research to date and not on your overall output as a high-potential. In preparation for module 2, you can either present your research interests as a whole or focus on the specific current results of your research in a key visual (e.g. PowerPoint, Miro, Mural etc.). Your research and its suitability for various outreach formats is discussed and analysed and you will receive feedback. You will attempt to understand the outreach potential of your research results and to discover suitable outreach formats for your research. In doing so, you will learn how to use FAU’s global network for your outreach activities.

The module is designed as a two-day workshop. Day 1 comprises four units of 90 minutes each. Day 2 is more hands-on and focuses on gathering practical experience leading to your first outreach results and making your research glow!

Please note that the workshop does not take place on two consecutive days. The second day is arranged with you individually. Our workshop coaches will contact you directly.

Schedule day 1:

  1. Present your researchThe day starts with selected participants presenting their current research results. The types of research results and their suitability for various outreach formats is discussed and feedback is given. You will attempt to understand the outreach potential of your research and to discover suitable outreach formats for it.
  2. Developing FAU Academy formats from your researchYou will become familiar with how to present your research in a format suitable for use in the FAU Academy for lifelong learning. You will discuss the strengths and specific opportunities of various further education formats. You will understand the steps involved in tailoring research results into FAU Academy formats. At the end of the session, you will be able to identify the potential of your research results for FAU Academy formats and you will understand how you can collaborate with the FAU Academy team.
  3. Developing citizen science formats from your researchThe focus here lies on transforming research into citizen science and co-creation formats for various stakeholders. You will become familiar with and understand various citizen science and co-creation formats. At the end of this session, you will be able to identify the outreach potential of your research results and understand how to use the JOSEPHS outreach platform at FAU.
  4. Use FAU’s global network for your outreach activitiesHere, you will discover FAU’s international network and strategic partners in science, business and society. We will discuss how you can use FAU’s extensive network and how you can incorporate it into your own personal network. You will make preparations for drafting short individual or team sessions in which you will present your research in a digital online format to either (1) a target group of participants in further education or lifelong learning or (2) a target audience for citizen science/co-creation. Day 2 will focus on implementing this digital online session.

Schedule day 2:

You will spend day 2 with the amazing teams from FAU ILI, FAU TV or funklust to create videos or podcasts of your research results. The results of day 2 are tangible and success easily visible: Your ‘product’ is launched via FAU’s online channels and receives marketing support from the FAU social media and marketing team. In addition, you will produce an outreach gallery with the other participants that will enable you to view all your work. This means we will always remember you, your research and your fellow FAUnext participants. Welcome to the world of outreach!

Dates: 11 November 2021 (9 am to 5 pm); subsequent appointments will be arranged with you individually.

Location: Online (we will inform you in good time if the event can be held face-to-face).
