Outreach module
Outreach module
Outreach offers researchers at FAU a wide range of opportunities to showcase themselves and their research in the context of science, business, society and politics.
Outreach at FAU is on hand to help you put all five of the key modes for strategic knowledge and technology transfer to the best possible use:
- From one mind to another
- Professional development
- Patents & licences
- Cooperation & co-creation
- Spin-offs
Benefit from the comprehensive expertise of FAU Vice President for Outreach Prof. Dr. Kathrin Möslein in the area of transfer structures, formats and platforms within FAU and elsewhere, as well as from the wide-reaching expertise of coach Dr. Karl Rabes. In addition, you can benefit from the expertise of the Communications and Press team for professional science communication. You can collaboratively increase the effectiveness of your outreach activities by using the joint services, formats and platforms available across the University, while making an important contribution to the visibility and impact of FAU as a whole at the same time.
We can help you to seize the opportunities available to you by providing training in the outreach skills area. We offer two modules in FAUnext:
- O1 ‘Shape Your FAU Innovator Profile’
- O2 ‘Make Your Research Glow’.
Please register for the modules via StudOn.
Both outreach modules are held in English.
The coaches will get in touch with you directly before the module starts to pass on details about what will be covered in the modules and to let you know if there are any documents which you should submit beforehand.
Module O1: Shape Your FAU Innovator Profile
Module O1 ‘Shape Your Innovator Profile’ offers you the opportunity to gain specific insights into what marks you as a high potential at FAU and beyond. You will learn to define your outreach goals and articulate a vision for change on the basis of them. Pinpoint the key features of your work and explore how you want to position yourself and present yourself to others. Your FAU innovator profile is your ‘personal business model’, a way for you to showcase yourself and your entire output as a high potential, irrespective of your academic background. The aim of the module is to encourage you to think in terms of business models and draft your own personal business model.
The module is designed as a one-day workshop followed by individual coaching sessions.
The workshop introduces you to the methodology and helps you to create your first ‘personal business model’. It involves an analysis, presentation and evaluation of how you are positioned in all the areas of relevance for high potentials and how you can focus, prioritise, and present your FAU innovator profile within FAU and beyond. You will grasp your potential and explore synergies with research, education and people-related activities at FAU.
The individual coaching sessions that follow will focus on shaping your vision to allow you to position yourself effectively as an FAU innovator, making the most of your selling points identified in your own personal business model.
Workshop:
Introduction to FAU innovator profile
The day starts with an introduction to the methodology behind the FAU innovator profile. The tools for the ‘personal business model’ are introduced, discussed and explained using examples. You will learn why it makes sense to think in terms of business models, no matter your academic background, and how the method can help you explore synergies with research, education and people-related activities.
Develop your own FAU innovator profile
You will develop a first version of your personal FAU innovator profile. You will ask yourself leading questions that will help you explore your own strengths and specific opportunities, whilst also evaluating threats and potential weaknesses. You will draw up your own holistic ‘personal business model’ that goes much further than what you could typically hope to achieve by simply reflecting on daily business in your own time.
Understanding the structures available for supporting FAU innovators
There’s always plenty of support available at FAU. There are a wide range of structures that support FAU researchers with their outreach activities. This module will help you become familiar with the support structures available at FAU and you will be able to identify the most promising structures for you.
Receive professional feedback on your FAU innovator profile
Based on the findings and discussions of the day, you will revise your FAU innovator profile, amend it to include synergies and support services and consider for example how you can help not only young researchers, but also students to get involved in public relations.
One-on-one coaching:
The starting point for your individual follow-up session in module O1 is the FAU innovator profile you drafted and possibly revised several times during the first part. During the session, you will take a detailed look at the features of your own personal business model. You will be guided to select the aspect of your vision that best suits your innovator profile and that will help you move forward in the areas of most relevance to you. The aim is to develop a specific, stable vision of how you wish to present yourself as a high potential within FAU and beyond.

Module O2: Make Your Research Glow
Unlike module O1, in module O2 the focus is not on you as a person but on your research to date. You can either present your research interests as a whole or the specific current results of your research in a key visual (e.g. PowerPoint, Miro, Mural). Your research and its suitability for various outreach formats is discussed and analysed and you will receive feedback. You will attempt to understand the outreach potential of your research results and to discover suitable outreach formats for your research. In doing so, you will learn how to use FAU’s global network for your outreach activities.
Module O2 is a one-day workshop followed by subsequent individual coaching sessions.
During the workshop, you will learn to appreciate the outreach potential of your research and will explore which outreach formats are available for positioning your research in a targeted fashion.
During the individual coaching session you will gather practical experience in one outreach format best suited to your research. This more in-depth session will not only give you your first taste of successful outreach activities, it will also make your research glow!
Workshop:
Pitch your research
The day starts with participants presenting their current research results. The types of research results and their suitability for various outreach formats is discussed and feedback is given. You will attempt to understand the outreach potential of your research and to discover suitable outreach formats for it.
Developing FAU Academy formats from your research
You will become familiar with how to present your research in a format suitable for use in the FAU Academy for lifelong learning. You will discuss the strengths and specific opportunities of various formats for professional development and learn to understand the steps you must take to boost your research. At the end of the session, you will be able to identify the potential of your research results for FAU Academy formats and you will understand how you can collaborate with the FAU Academy team.
Developing citizen science formats from your research
The focus here lies on transforming research into citizen science and co-creation formats for various stakeholders. You will become familiar with and learn to understand various citizen science and co-creation formats. At the end of this session, you will be able to identify the outreach potential of your research results and understand how to use the JOSEPHS outreach platform at FAU.
Use FAU’s global network for your outreach activities
Here, you will discover FAU’s international network and strategic partners in science, business and society. We will discuss how you can use FAU’s extensive network and incorporate it into your own personal network. You will make preparations for drafting short individual or team sessions in which you will present your research in a digital online format to either (1) a target group of participants in further education or lifelong learning (FAU Academy) or (2) a target audience for citizen science/co-creation. The individual coaching session will focus on implementing this digital online session.
One-on-one coaching:
You will work with one of the amazing teams from FAU ILI, FAU TV or funklust to create videos or podcasts of your research results. The results are tangible and success easily visible: Your ‘product’ is launched via FAU’s online channels and receives marketing support from the FAU social media and marketing team. In addition, you will produce an outreach gallery with the other participants that will enable you to view all your work. This means we will always remember you, your research and your fellow FAUnext participants. Welcome to the world of outreach!
