FAQs

General information on tuition fees and legal framework

FAU’s goal is to provide all students with equal opportunities for academic success and to ensure outstanding study and learning conditions on a permanent basis. Against this backdrop, we are introducing tuition fees for students from non-EU states, in accordance with the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act (BayHIG, Section 13).

Going forward, all students will contribute to the financing and ongoing improvement of study conditions: Students from non-EU countries via tuition fees, and German and EU students through the funding of the higher education system through taxation.

Tuition fees will be levied for all Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs. No exceptions are planned for these degree programs.

No tuition fees will be levied for State Examination degree programs, degree programs for professional development, students studying for a doctoral degree (or PhD), students on the FAU Scientia program, exchange students or visiting students (in particular ERASMUS), module programs and other studies.

All students already enrolled in winter semester 2026/27 and the groups named under Section 13 (3)(2) BayHIG are exempt:

  • Members of another member state in the European Union
  • Members of another contracting state of the Agreement on the European Economic Area (member of the EEA but not the EU: Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein)
  • Individuals who obtained their university entrance qualification in Germany
  • Individuals with established ties to Germany according to Section 8 paragraphs 1 to 4 of the Federal Training Assistance Act, unless they are already covered by nos. 1 to 3
  • Individuals who are considered equal to German citizens or are exempt from charges due to further agreements, legal directives or interstate agreements.

The following students are also exempt from paying tuition fees:

  • Students who are currently on leave of absence
  • Students with a disability pursuant to Section 2 of the Bavarian Act on the Equal Treatment of Disabled People (Behindertengleichstellungsgesetz, BGG) that severely impacts their ability to study
  • International students in asylum proceedings with temporary permission to stay pursuant to Section 55 AsyGl and citizenship of a country assessed by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees on the basis of the declaration from the Federal Minister of the Interior as having a protected quota of 50% or more (exemption upon request for the duration of the proceedings)

Yes. Information on scholarships and waivers will soon be available on our website.

This application fee is not charged for applicants with dual EU/EEC nationality.

Students with established ties to Germany are individuals who have been living in Germany for at least five years before beginning a degree program and who have been in legal employment during this time or who have at least one parent who has been living in Germany during three of the last six years and who was in legal employment during this time.

If you obtained a Bachelor’s degree from FAU, you are exempt from paying tuition fees for the consecutive Master’s degree program. This is subject to the condition that you complete your Bachelor’s degree program successfully before commencing the Master’s degree program.

In order to avoid paying tuition fees, you must prove that you completed your Bachelor’s degree at the latest by the time of enrollment (five weeks after lectures start).

If you obtained a Bachelor’s degree from a German university, you are generally exempt from paying tuition fees for the Master’s degree program. This is subject to the condition that you complete your Bachelor’s degree program successfully before commencing the Master’s degree program.

  • Students who are currently on leave of absence are exempt from the obligation to pay tuition fees for the duration of their leave of absence.
  • Students with a disability pursuant to Section 2 of the Bavarian Act on the Equal Treatment of Disabled People (Behindertengleichstellungsgesetz, BGG) that severely impacts their ability to study can apply for exemption by submitting proof of their disability. This is then checked on a case by case basis.
  • International students in asylum proceedings with temporary permission to stay pursuant to Section 55 AsyGl and citizenship of a country assessed by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees on the basis of the declaration from the Federal Minister of the Interior as having a protected quota of 50% or more are exempt from paying tuition fees upon request and for the duration of the proceedings.

The amount of tuition fees depends on the degree program. The tuition fees for your degree program are stated above.

As a rule, tuition fees for

  • Bachelor’s degree programs are 1,000, 2,000 or 3,000 euros per semester
  • Master’s degree programs are 2,000, 4,000 or 6,000 euros per semester

Studying two degree programs: If you are enrolled in two degree programs at one time, you must pay tuition fees for both degree programs.

The regular semester contribution is due irrespective of tuition fees.

In the case of de-registration within four weeks of the start of the semester, any tuition fees that have been paid can be reimbursed upon application. Reimbursement is not possible for de-registration at a later date.

How to pay the fee

The fee is paid via ePayBayern, the e-payment platform of the Free State of Bavaria.

The payment notification is made available electronically via the campo user account. You receive a message about the payment notification during the application process as well as by email after it has been uploaded.

The amount of the fee is stated in the payment notification. This is made available in your campo user account.

Payment via PayPal or credit card (Visa/Mastercard) is accepted.

Payment is accepted in Euros only. The rules of the payment service provider (PayPal, Visa, MasterCard) apply regarding the exchange rate and fees.

The application fee is due when the application is received and must be paid via ePayment at the latest ten working days after the payment notification has been received.

After successful completion of the payment via ePayBayern, it takes 3-10 working days for the payment to appear in campo. The application will not be processed before payment has been received.

As soon as your payment has appeared in campo, you will receive a payment confirmation (PDF) and a notification via email.

If the payment is not made within ten working days after the payment notification has been received, the application will not be processed. This also applies if the payment cannot clearly be allocated to an application.

Please contact ePayBayern via email at ePayment@lff.bayern.de if you have any problems with the payment.

Please note that it cannot answer any questions related to the application in campo and the obligation to pay the fee, as ePayBayern is a payment service provider and has no knowledge about the reason for the payment (amount, reason, deadlines, and so on).
