FAU's archive

The FAU University Archive is the central storage location for all of the archives from the history of the University, which was founded in 1743 by Margrave Friedrich and later expanded by Margrave Alexander. The majority of the collection is made up of largely complete administrative documents relating to general administration, human resources, student affairs, accounting and asset management.

It also contains documents from the four original faculties – theology, law, medicine, and humanities and social sciences – and the Faculty of Sciences and Faculty of Engineering, founded in 1928 and 1966 respectively. Another part of the archive consists of material from the former Nürnberger Handelshochschule, which was integrated into FAU in 1961, and the Nürnberger Pädagogische Hochschule, which became part of the University in 1972. The remainder is made up of private collections of documents, photographs and flyers that have been donated to the University. New donations are always welcome. Despite a small number of documents being lost, particularly during war time, the University Archive provides a more or less complete record of over 260 years of FAU history.

[1] The pro-rector was chosen from among the University’s professors, while until the abolition of the monarchy the ruling monarch was the rector.
[2] Each term of office began on 4 November (winter semester) or 4 May (summer semester) – unless this date fell on a Sunday or there was another important reason – and ended when the next pro-rector was appointed.
[3] Died in office.
[4] Left for another appointment.
[5] After the abolition of the monarchy in 1920, the pro-rector was renamed rector and chosen from among the University’s professors; similarly the position previously known as expro-rector was renamed pro-rector.
[6] Under the National Socialist regime, by decree of the Bavarian ministry of culture issued on 28 August 1933, the rector was not elected but was appointed by the Bavarian ministry of culture.
[7] The office of rector was abolished by the American military government; the University was closed during the summer semester 1945.
[8] Appointed rector by the American military government.
[9] Appointed director of the higher education department at the Bavarian ministry of culture.
[10] Temporary rector.
[11] Died in office.
