During studies, various costs arise that can pose significant financial challenges for students: rent, food, electricity, public transportation… Often, there is no time to earn enough money through part-time jobs alongside university work. Scholarships can help. Scholarships or other forms of financial support are offered by universities themselves, talent promotion organizations, or foundations. The hurdles in the application process are often lower than initially assumed. Here is an overview.

Deutschlandstipendium

Since 2011, the federal government has been offering the “Deutschlandstipendium.” Students at FAU can also apply for it. The funding for initially two semesters amounts to 300 euros per month and can be renewed annually. Voluntary work or special family circumstances are included in the selection process. The Deutschlandstipendium is awarded once a year in the winter semester. The application deadline for the winter semester 2025/2026 begins on June 15, 2025, and ends on July 15, 2025 (final deadline). In addition to financial support, the program is designed to promote exchange in the scholarship network.

Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz (BAFöG, Federal Training Assistance Act)

The probably best-known form of financial support during studies is the Federal Training Assistance Act, or BAföG for short. Receiving state financial support depends on various factors, including housing situation and parents’ income. BAföG is paid monthly and must be repaid later.
