The FAU DigiVax project is developing an AI system that can reliably scan data on paper

Millions of items of data about vaccinations lie unused in paper vaccination records and cannot be utilized for digital patient files. The ability to use this data, however, is essential for research into vaccines, disease prevention using vaccines and providing modern vaccines to the population in Bavaria and across Germany. For the DigiVax project, FAU researcher Andreas Kist, professor at the Department of Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering (AIBE) is asking for donations of data: Anyone who would like to support the project, can take photographs of their vaccination record (not the pages with personal details such as your name and date of birth) and upload the images in the portal of the study at .

The portal contains instructions and further information. Guests at Schlossgartenfest on June 27, 2026 also have the opportunity to talk to Professor Kist at the discovery trail (“Wissensparcours”) and have their own vaccination record scanned. After all, it’s small enough to fit into almost any handbag.

“Every data donation helps”, says Andreas Kist. “All patients will benefit if we succeed in digitalizing patient information reliably – it’s like a service for society.” Why does he want to start with vaccination data? Kist: “Data about vaccinations are clearly structured and also highly relevant to medicine. This makes them ideal as a pilot project for digital medicine of the future.”
