Making it easier to check your e-mails

Once you are a student at FAU, e-mails are sent to your own university inbox. This happens automatically once you activate your user ID in the IdM portal, where the digital identity of all students is saved, and reserve an @fau.de address.

You can either access e-mails using the webmail interface in your browser or an e-mail programme like Outlook or Thunderbird. Or, if you prefer, you can forward your e-mails to your personal inbox.

Important: You must read your e-mails from the University. They give you important information about examination dates, dates for re-registration or important information from the Executive Board about navigating the coronavirus pandemic at the University.

How to forward e-mails

After logging in at https://www.idm.fau.de/go scroll down to the section ‘Services’ and click on the magnifying class at ‘e-mail’. Here you can enter a private external address to which your e-mails should be forwarded. You then no longer need to check your FAUMail inbox in order to read your important university e-mails. If you are unsure, it is also possible to arrange for your e-mails to be forwarded and still have them directed to your FAUMail inbox as well. All you need to do is select both options.

Using the e-mail client

A description of how to incorporate your personal FAUMail inbox using an IMAP account into an e-mail client such as Thunderbird or Outlook or directly via the web interface https://faumail.uni-erlangen.de is available on the RRZE website (only German).
