16 subjects among the top 20 in Germany

Four subjects from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) have been included in this year’s QS subject ranking for the first time: Geology, Law, Psychology and Archeology. After one year’s break, Pharmacy has once more returned to the ranking. A total of 21 subjects from FAU are listed, with our University represented in all five subject areas included in the ranking from education information service provider Quacquarelli Symonds.

Best international ranking for FAU: Materials Science

Like in previous years, Materials Science is listed as the best subject at FAU on the international list, and at place 74, it is among the top 100 in the world. Five other subjects from FAU have made it into the top 200 in the world: Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics and Astronomy. Physics and Astronomy jumped 36 places to 162.

Top 10 in Germany

Four subjects at FAU are listed among the top 10 in Germany: Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering share 6th place, closely followed by Mechanical Engineering in 8th place. A total of 12 other subjects made it into the top 20, with Law coming in at place 13 even though it was only included in the ranking for the first time this year. Other subjects in the top 20: Chemistry, Business & Management Studies, Mathematics, Medicine, Archeology, Physics and Astronomy, Earth & Marine Sciences, Computer Science, Geology, Geophysics, Economics & Econometrics.

A brief explanation of the QS subject ranking

For its subject ranking, QS Quacquarelli Symonds investigated over 5000 universities, before including a total of 1559 of them in the ranking. The 55 subjects included in the ranking are split into the five subject areas Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Science and Medicine, Natural Science and Social Sciences & Management The following categories were considered when assessing the universities and their subjects: academic and employer reputation, citations, h-index and international research network.
