Positive development underscores growing visibility and research strength
Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) has improved its position both internationally and nationally in the current Shanghai Ranking (Academic Ranking of World Universities). In the international ranking, FAU surged 17 places ahead to 226th place (previous year: 243). In Germany, FAU climbed two places and now holds 15th place (previous year: 17).
FAU performed particularly strongly in research performance per capita. In 84th place worldwide, FAU ranks among the top 100 universities in the world, which is the university’s strongest individual result. Last year, FAU reached 95th place in this category.
Significant progress in research performance and visibility
In terms of the number of its scientific publications, FAU achieved an excellent result. For its publications in the prestigious journals Nature and Science, FAU ranked 167th place worldwide, once again making it one of the leading universities internationally. FAU was able to improve in the number of highly cited researchers. In this category, the university has risen from 255th to 199th place worldwide.
FAU also scores well in these two categories in Germany: In scientific publications, it climbed from 10th place to 7th place. At the same time, FAU’s research continues to gain visibility: At 10th place for citations per researcher, FAU gained six places compared to the previous year.
Continuous upward trend
The current ranking continues a positive trend throughout recent years. Since 2022, FAU has continuously improved in the Shanghai Ranking – from 262nd place to 226th place worldwide. This underscores the university’s growing international visibility and research strength.
The Shanghai Ranking, officially known as the “Academic Ranking of World Universities,” has been published annually since 2003 and is one of the world’s best-known university rankings. For the current edition, more than 2,500 universities were assessed; the top 1,000 universities are published in the ranking.
