One of the 100 best universities in the world in six subjects

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is one of the 100 best universities in the world in a total of six countries (five in 2025). In Germany, FAU even managed to jump into the top 5 in ten subjects (seven in 2024). A total of more than 2000 universities all over the world were evaluated in the ranking.

How good is FAU compared to other international universities?

The subject Telecommunication Engineering gained the best ranking at FAU, coming in at place 75 in the world. With Mathematics, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Medical Technology, Human Biological Sciences and Energy Science & Engineering, five other countries have been ranked in the Top 100. In six other subjects, namely Dentistry & Oral Sciences, Automation & Control, Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering and Physics, FAU was ranked among the top 150 in the world.

How good is FAU in Germany?

At a national level, FAU made it into the top 10 with 17 subjects in 2026: Telecommunication Engineering leads in first place; Computer Science & Engineering follows in second place. This is followed in third place by Energy Science & Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mathematics and Chemical Engineering. Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, Biomedical Engineering and Automation & Control were ranked fourth, and Dentistry & Oral Sciences and Metallurgical Engineering both gained seventh place. Mechanical Engineering is in eighth place, followed by Human Biological Sciences and Sociology in ninth place. The subjects Physics and Chemistry are both in tenth place.

The Shanghai subject ranking, officially known as the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (abbreviation: GRAS), has been published on an annual basis by Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 2009. A total of 57 individual subjects were assessed from the fields of natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences on the basis of various indicators. The ranking focuses on research. Indicators taken into consideration include research publications, citations, Nobel prizes and Fields medals. More than 2000 universities from 100 countries were assessed for the ranking in 2026.
