Research module

Research module

As a researcher, driving your research forward as effectively as possible is your key priority. How can you finance your research? Is your idea specific enough to quality for third-party funding? Has an idea for research been on your mind for a while, but you haven’t found the time to take it any further? Then this is the course for you! Our outstanding coaches for modules R1 and R2 help you take up the reins of your research idea and steer effectively towards your goal.

With the right methods you learn the skills you need to make your idea competitive and accessible to the research world. You also have the unique opportunity to share experiences directly with successful FAU professors. They give you constructive feedback tailored specifically to your projects.

You can choose between the two modules R1: Presenting competitive third-party projects and using research funding strategically and R2: Developing successful networks.

The coaches will get in touch with you directly before the module starts to pass on details about what will be covered in the modules and to let you know if there are any documents which you should submit beforehand.

Registration

Date: three consecutive meetings
1. meeting: 24.10.2024, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; in presence
2. meeting: 28.01.2025; 60-minute online meetings, to be organised with each participant separately
3. meeting: 18.02.2025, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., online
Places: up to 6
Registration deadline: 01.10.2024

The module aims to enable participants to submit competitive applications for external funding. For this purpose, participants should already have developed and bring a project idea and a short exposé of their project. Module R1 consists of three parts that build on each other:

Part 1: Presenting competitive third-party projects

In the workshop, various methods of proposal writing will be taught and tried out on the basis of the participants’ own research idea. A special focus will be put on the presentation of the idea using the method of storytelling. The requirements of the different funding agencies will be taken into account.

Coach

With their many years’ experience in business, academia and administration, the team from Weisblum motivates organizations to take a fresh approach in order to be able to react more flexibly to changing requirements now and in the future. Berit Edlich has many years’ experience as coach, covering every aspect of research funding. Her work focuses on supporting researchers who work in collaboration with others in interdisciplinary contexts. She has gathered her experience in the areas of funding consultation, creativity techniques and team development in various universities and research institutions.

Part 2: Online individual consultation meetings

The aim of the individual consultation meetings is to verify the suitability of the participants´ project ideas for the funding institutions/programs under consideration – on the basis of curriculum vitae analyses and application synopsis – to assess the significance of third-party funding for the further development of each scientific career and, if necessary, to help participants to develop their own funding strategy.

In order to ensure adequate preparation, participants must submit their CVs as well as a max. 1-page exposé of their project idea. Confidential treatment of all documents in accordance with applicable data protection regulations (DSGVO) is guaranteed.

The duration of the individual consultation meetings is approximately 60 minutes.

Part 3: Online review simulation

In the online review simulation, participants receive feedback on their exposés from a subject-related perspective by established researchers at FAU and from an interdisciplinary perspective by the trainer, Dr. Beate Scholz.

Networks are based on relationships and trust. During this two-day seminar you learn how to establish and nurture networks, how networks can be kept alive in the long term, and what that has to do with your own personal abilities. The seminar will look at both traditional networks of personal contacts and today’s social networks on social media and the different approaches required for each. Participants will also benefit from best practice examples presented by experienced scientists.
