Funding for ensuring joinability in versatile process chains

The German Research Foundation (DFG) is extending funding for a collaborative research center (CRC) or transregio (TRR), for which FAU is a co-applicant. The researchers will receive a further three million euros in funding over the next four years.

The joinability of components in multi-material systems is a crucial factor contributing towards efficient production processes. These systems are used in various sectors such as the automotive industry, plant construction, aviation and applications for the use of renewable energies. The increasing diversity of variants and the urgent need for resilience concerning changes in delivery chains present major challenges for joinability.

The research consortium CRC/TRR 285 “Method development for mechanical joinability in versatile process chains” carries out research into scientific methods for increasing the versatility of mechanical joining processes in order to ensure long-term joinability for various requirement profiles in versatile process chains, without having to make elaborate adjustments or conduct physical investigations to check that everything works as it should.

After having the second funding period of the consortium approved, the researchers hope to investigate the interactions between manufacturing processes and load-bearing capacities in order to attain a versatile method for designing mechanical joints.
