BioBlitz: Interactive campaign in the Botanical Garden
Visitors to FAU’s Botanical Garden can provide assistance with documenting species diversity
Botanical gardens are oases of biological diversity. They offer ideal conditions for a large number of wild animals, plants, fungi and lichen. In conjunction with around 30 institutions in German-speaking countries, the “Verband Botanischer Gärten” (Association of Botanical Gardens) invites you to take part in a large-scale “BioBlitz” for documenting species diversity in botanical gardens as part of the Botanical Gardens week (June 14 to 22, 2025). The Botanical Garden at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg is also taking part.
What is a “BioBlitz”?
A BioBlitz is an interactive campaign for a limited period of time with the intention of documenting the species living in a defined area and has become well-known due to the “City Nature Challenge” or the “NABU Insektensommer”. During a BioBlitz, visitors have the opportunity to get involved themselves and to record the wild plants, fungi and plants they see in the gardens. These observations can be documented, identified, and uploaded on the iNaturalist platform, which is free of charge. They are then checked by experts. The campaign is not only a fun competition, but should also increase awareness for the large number of plants and animals that share our urban surroundings, but are often overlooked.
How it works:
- Download the iNaturalist app, for example in the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store and register free of charge.
- Visit the garden and take pictures of the animals, fungi, lichen, mosses and plants you find and upload them via iNaturalist.
- Everything observed in the FAU Botanical Garden and Aroma Garden between June 14 and June 22, 2025 will count for the competition.
Important:
- Search for wild animals and plants only
- Just take photographs of the animals, do not disturb them or try to catch them
- Do not step on the beds or damage the plants
