“ERASMUS+” – Funding

ERASMUS+ funding

The grant amounts depend on the number of participants and the amount of funding granted by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and can therefore only be calculated at short notice. Nominated Erasmus students can find the exact amount in their confirmation of funding, which they should receive in July.  This grant should cover the extra costs that arise through spending a period of time studying abroad. If all available resources have already been allocated, any students subsequently joining the programme can only go abroad as “zero grant” students without any scholarship. However, they can still benefit from all of the programme’s advantages (including the waiver of tuition fees at host universities).

The funding period does not have to correspond to the actual length of the stay.

Funding in the 2016 programme year covers:

  • Waiver of tuition fees at the host university
  • Monthly mobility grant (not a full scholarship!). The Erasmus mobility grants paid out are based on country groups and thus depend on the relevant costs of living in the guest country.
    • Country group 1: estimated at 360 euros/month = 12 euros/funding day: Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Norway, Sweden, Great Britain
    • Country group 2: estimated at 300 euros/month = 10 euros/funding day: Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Greece, Iceland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey
    • Country group 3: estimated at 240 euros/month = 8 euros/funding day: Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Macedonia

The scholarship amounts will remain the same during the 2017/18 funding period. Regardless of the exact length of stay, the financial funding shall amount to

  • max. 4 months of funding for stays lasting 1 semester (120 funding days)
  • max. 8 months of funding for stays lasting 2 semesters (240 funding days)

There can therefore be a difference between the length of the stay and the funding period.

A mobility grant can only be paid if you have completed your Erasmus period of study overseas for a minimum of 3 (except for trimesters) and a maximum of 12 months. If your stay comes to an end before the minimum duration, you will have to pay back any mobility grants already paid.

Funding covers:

  • Waiver of tuition fees at the host university
  • Monthly mobility grant (not a full scholarship!) of €650 = €21.67 / day
  • Travel subsidy, based on simple distance as per the EU calculator:
km Fixed funding rate
100  – 499 €180
500 – 1999   (e.g Sarajevo, Belgrade) €275
2000 – 2999 (e.g. Irbid, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem) €360
3000 – 3999 €530
4000 – 7999 €820
more than 8000 €1110

The “Erasmus+” special funding includes extra funds for people who have a degree of disability of more than 50% or particular needs (student parents). This requires making a separate application to the Central Office for International Affairs (RIA). Please contact Yvonne Wöhner for further information.

Additional information on universities accessible to those with disabilities can be found on the website of the European Agency for Development in Special Needs Education (www.european-agency.org).

Due to the result of the referendum held on 9 February 2014, the European Commission has suspended the conclusion of participation agreements with Switzerland for the Erasmus+ programme until further notice.

This means that Switzerland has the status of a partner country but not of a programme country. As a result, there is currently no EU funding for mobility periods for students coming from/going to Switzerland. The Swiss universities have instead launched a “replacement programme” entitled the “Swiss European Mobility Programme” for funding mobility periods in Switzerland.
